Politics Governance
Senegal is a republic under multiparty democratic rule with the president as chief of state. The president is elected by popular vote for a seven-year term. He appoints the prime minister. The government is headed by the prime minister who runs the country with a Council of Ministers appointed by him in consultation with the President. The legislative branch is the unicameral National Assembly or Assemblee Nationale with 140 members elected by direct popular vote to serve five-year terms. Elections were last held in February 2000. The current President is Abdoulaye Wade and the Prime Minister is Niasse Moustapha.
